Oakland City Council gives final approval to licensing large-scale pot cultivation plants

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The City Council gave final approval Tuesday to a plan that makes Oakland the first city in the country to authorize large-scale industrial pot cultivation.
The city intends to license four production plants where marijuana would be grown, packaged and processed for medical use.

Under the plan, which would take effect in January, license recipients would be heavily taxed and regulated. They would have to pay the city $211,000 in annual permit fees, carry $2 million in liability insurance and be prepared to devote up to 8 percent of gross sales to taxes.

The measure also would require bidders to meet certain labor, environmental and product safety standards.

However, there would be no size restrictions on the facilities.

Two of the eight City Council members abstained from the vote.

Supporters of the measure say it will create jobs and bring in much-needed revenue to Oakland. They also say it will give the city an advantage if California voters approve the legalization of recreational marijuana in November.

Opponents argue the urban pot farms would put small medical marijuana growers out of business.
Permits would not be limited to Oakland-based businesses. Councilwoman Desley Brooks said she hoped local business owners and minorities would be encouraged to apply.

BOOOOOOO.  It will drive prices down and hurt small farms.

SSSSHHHIIISSS =  I agree, PEPE!

Re: Oakland City Council gives final approval to licensing large-scale pot

I don't agree that it will hurt anyone.  "Small farms" can still grow it, as can private parties - just like they can grow tomatoes, tobacco, lettuce, etc.

I think you guys are crying because it spells the end of $50+ eighths at the dispensaries (which I think are illegal anyway), so less profit.

I want the price to go as low as possible to destroy the cartel market.  The sooner this is normalized, the sooner the cops are out of the picture, too.

So on point !!

I just don't get it? Something smells in Denmark. People are always crying and complaining about the legalization for medicinal use but yet when it comes to legalization and other people are going to get involved then they're crying about that too. If you're not breaking the law and you have a legitimate "collective" and everyone involved is enjoying the "fruits of their labor" then what's the big deal.  Collectives and small farms can still do what they were doing or what they should be doing. People can grow their own organic produce or they can shop at the big mega grocery store, same thing. Stop being shady and making it seem less legitimate than it is!

Re: Oakland City Council gives final approval to licensing large-scale pot

i agree with spookk its about time the prices go down
in amsterdam it is half of what we pay the collectives are charging too much
this will lower the prices vote  yes on prop 19
stop your crying................

My prices even in the hey day were below 50.  Today we as a collective charge ZERO! Our members support the cause with donations, from paper to plumbing. All are on the same page. If one member gives a bit more they get a bit more, if that is what they request. Everyone is one the same page. I do not like big ware houses, and a few who dominate will control price as well. It does not effect us but I want to see mom and pop continue, they supported us when things were really ugly i the last 20 years. I give back.  no money exchanged. That gets LEO pissed
