Topic: Looking to start a Dispensary, which direction..Lawyer, Seminar ect...

I would like to open a dispensary in the area anywhere North of Sacramento, but South of Lincoln. Which towns are most green friendly and what steps should I begin with. I have researched for hours and I have found numerous one-day-know- everything seminars. Should I just break down and get a lawyer, or does someone know a better way?

Search the forums here.  There is an ad for a  work shop meeting this weekend some time.  Check it out.  It's held by Crusaders for Patients Rights I think.  There you can learn from the dispensary operators and an attorney what it takes to open and run a successful dispensary.  i saw medicalfelix post something regarding it.

Re: Looking to start a Dispensary, which direction..Lawyer, Seminar ect...

I saw that, I guess my question should have been, Which seminars or lawyers are the best.  I hate to spend a couple hundred dollars to find out it is a sham.

Listen to a lawyer, not just some "expert". If your not a lawyer you don't have to tell the truth.

Re: Looking to start a Dispensary, which direction..Lawyer, Seminar ect...

if you plan on opening a dispensing collective (a "dispensary" is illegal) you had better seek legal advice and keep a lawer on retainer that specializes in mmj law

i am surprised to hear of how many people want to open a collective, but don't want to retain a lawyer for advice and guidance!!  if any prospective collective operators are not ready & able to retain a lawyer, then they're certainly not ready to open a dispensing collective

Be wary of the seminars.

I agree with both of you, medicalfelix and jeanne71366, if anyone is planning to open a dispensary and can't afford the professionals necessary to do it right, then they can't afford to open a dispensary = period!!

It seems too many people just want to get aboard the MMJ money train with no thought of learning, planning, researching or investigating.

I recently got into a group conversation with a person who was thrilled that they had located the perfect building for their soon-to-open MMJ dispensary.
I was rather surprised, as it is in a very conservative area.
I asked if the location was in the city or county.
They didn't know.
Okay, so then I asked if dispensary regulations in that area were enforced through land use codes, or LEO.
They had NO idea what I was even talking about.
But they knew that "this guy" had opened a shop 50 miles from there and "it was awesome, he's making $5,000 a day!"
They also did not know anything about the local regulations = at all.
"MMJ's legal anywhere in California, it's a state law."

No lawyer, no accountant, no permit, no business license, no security system, no clue.
But they do have 3 elaborate and very expensive computers, an incredible sound system and "a bunch of cool, new office furniture" AND a 2 year lease on the building.

Turns out they drove their 'extra' MMJ to the east coast (black market), and used part of their cash to start this "business."
I'll let you know if they ever actually open for business.

Re: Looking to start a Dispensary, which direction..Lawyer, Seminar ect...

I broke down and went to a seminar and hired a lawyer. I figured more info is better than less.  Still I have tried to find all that information and would be willing to open anywhere between Sacramento and Marysville.  The more I look into it the more confused I am, I now have a lawyer.  I seem to get more maybes than yes or no answers.  Is it legal here? Maybe... I would write all the things I am thinking but the post would be a mile long.  I WILL OPEN THIS BUSINESS.  I just want to do it right the first time.  I do not look good in orange suits.  I need an accountant still, but I hate to hire one before I even open.
Hopefully it will all become clear soon.

Have a look at the documents in the greeen tabs at the top of my web page at http://www.AboutMedicalMarijuana.com I think you will find some of the information there useful.

What kind of lawyer did you hire?  If you have more questions then answers now that you have a lawyer I'd be very careful.  If you can't get a straight answer, I'd be really worried.

Since this seminar is in New Jersey and you posted it in "Access Northern California" multiple times, it's considered off topic.

The above post is EXACTLY what I am talking about.  Be very wary of attorney's too.  There are many great MMJ attorney's, but even more shady MMJ attorney's who know you won't survive long and because you don't know any better, end up with your 10k-15k retainer.

JellyBellyJoe:
Unincorporated Sacramento County has a ban.  There are dispensaries operating, but the county is addressing it very soon.
Placer County has a ban
Roseville has a ban
Loomis & Rocklin...bans
Lincoln I am not sure about.  Call the city's department of revenue and ask if they are issuing permits.

Some advice...
Don't trust others with your freedom.  It took me 2 years of research to educate myself.  You shouldn't have to pay someone, this information is out there you just have to spend alot of time finding it.  This website is a great resource.  Use the search bar on the home page.

Good Luck!
