Topic: Migraines

Does anyone else use Medical Marijuana to treat severe migraines?

I have suffered from severe migraines for about the past 15 years and have been given prescriptions for all kinds of narcotics over the years, and normally keep a supply of morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and demerol on hand along with several non-narcotic migraine medications to treat them with. I have over 30 prescription bottles on my nightstand, all for my migraines, and the side effects of it and the various medications. Each time I would see my doctor, he would give me a refill prescription of the narcotics that I had already been trying that didn't work, instead of finding something that did work, and didn't carry with it all of the side effects associated with narcotics.

Last year I finally got tired of asking my doctors to try something else other than the numerous narcotics that they keep pushing off onto me like a typical "drug dealer". I asked my doctor to send my records over to another doctor that I had spoken to about medical marijuana so that I could see about getting certified for it by him. I had a feeling that he would not cooperate, so at the same time I contacted every doctor that I had seen in the past 15 years for the migraines. All of them except for my current doctor sent the files over, even though he said that he would.

I finally got certified and received my "blue card" for medical marijuana last October, and have not taken any of the prescription medications since that time. I finally found something that works! At least it works when I have it. It is difficult here in Hawaii because you can only have 3 mature plants, 4 immature plants, and one ounce for each mature plant at one time, which is not an adequate supply for someone who suffers from 4 to 5 migraines per week, and there is no other "legal" way to get it in this state.

I have personally seen a decrease in the frequency of and intensity of my migraines since starting the Medical Marijuana treatments and I am wondering what other migraine sufferers have found with their treatments.

Re: Migraines

I USE IT FOR MIGRAINS TOO!

i understand what youve gone through.

ive had migrains since i was 13 years old.

so 8 years now.

sometimes they are bad enough that i dont feel like i should be driving in that condition!

When i get a headache, it kills my appetite, so i go 7+ hours without ever having food cross my mind, by the time i think to eat something, its too late and the thouhgt of eating makes me sick.
also the headache makes me go to bed early, so i end up waking up in the middle of the night, and it really messes up my sleep cycle which leads to more headaches|!|!!

Its nice to have some relief from that crappy cycle!

tell me if you feel this way, the pain from the migrian, gets you really low, and the cannabis gets you high, not high enough to be "high" but allitle closer to "normal".

i dotn know, just a certain way to think of it, but im sure there are plenty of people that couldnt think of it that way because i used the word "high", and they equate that wrd with drug use/abuse.

modern medicine drug dealers................... cannabis is all natural!

Re: Migraines

I understand what you are going through with the migraines. When I get one, the only thing that I can do is go into a cool, dark, soundproof room and wait it out, that was until I started using medical cannabis to treat it with.

Now, instead of getting 4 to 5 migraines a week, I get 1 every few weeks, which is a tremendous difference, also when they do hit now, they do not seem as intense in pain.

What I do to treat mine is use edibles each night, usually a brownie, or chocolate chip cookie. That seems to keep the migraines from happening so often, then when I do get one, if I am at home, I will use a vaporizer to treat it with, and all of the pain and nausea is gone within seconds. Unfortunately i do not have a portable vaporizer yet, so if I am away from home, I am required to use a pipe, and I load it with just enough for 1 or 2 hits, and the pain is gone.

This is the only medication that I have found that causes no bad side effects, and is 100% safe to use, and the only one that actually works!

Re: Migraines

Hey there, I use it too for migraines .  I do not smoke it though and the vaporizer baggie thing seems a bit to much for me at this time I am new to this and I injest it when I see the spots swirling around.  I would not attempt smoking it the way it makes you choke and fear it would give me an anuirism or something.  When I see the white things I know the base of my skull is in for a pounding within minutes and the vomiting soon follows which is a real drag for my children to see I was afraid to hide in my room thinking that I may die in there so I lay out on the couch they would last 30 hours sometimes. This injesting MEDIJUANA WORKS .  Taken at first symptoms I still get the pressure buildup then it is like a flush just when you think it will not work it flushes the pain away and  the nausea never hits I find myself up and about smiling as if I have once again cheated death.  There is alot to be said here by many others I also suffer chronic low and center back pain from an industrial injury the medijuana loosens me up and gets me goin great opiates are just lining doctors pockets THIS STUFF WORKS DO NOT BE ASHAMED TO TRY IT AND GET THE WORD OUT!  Did I mention chronic pain has slowly made me a bitter person to be around and my familly enjoys being around me and prefers this medijuana over the other meds and I plan on trying the Indica version for sleeping as you must know the sativa type helps with daily functions.  You cannot die with overdose either something that needs to be illustrated very clearly especially if you have lost a loved one to prescription overdose. MANY PEOPLE TAKE THE PAIN PILL AND ANOTHER AS NEEDED THEY  FORGET ABOUT TIME OR TO TIRED TO PAY ATTENTION AND BEFORE THEY KNOW IT THEY HAVE STOPPED BREATHING WE CAN STOP THIS.  CALL ME CRAZY I WANT TO BE IN AS LITTLE PAIN AS POSSIBLE .  I hope this helps someone in genuine need of a less toxic alternative to other meds.  Thank you for your time and take care.

Re: Migraines

Stan,
I used to have the auras also, but over the years mine have stopped, so I no longer get warning signs that a migraine is imminent. I have started using the edibles at night as a preventative and using a vaporizer when I get a migraine now, which is a lot less frequent, sometimes I can go for a couple weeks without one now unlike the 3 or 4 a week I would get before the edibles.

The vaporizer I use doesn't have the bag like the Volcano does, so I can use it for a smaller dose, just enough to get a couple hits off of it and the migraine is gone, then I turn it off. But i do keep my portable kit handy with my small pipe just in case I cant get to my vaporizer when I get a sudden migraine.

Medical Marijuana has given me back my life. I am an Archbishop, and I run 4 businesses, (which were about to be closed due to the migraines), now I am able to have a normal life and work each day without having to lock myself in a dark quiet room vomiting for hours or sometimes days at a time, neglecting my businesses. It is a world of difference.

Re: Migraines

RC I am glad you too have found a reasonable cure I am up now as my lower back is cramped up I guess I should check into a portable vaporizer for cannabis consumption .   The headaches can be quite frightening and the thought of going out to work is dangerous.  I was recommended the use of Cannabis six years ago by a dear friend who used antidepressants before his doctor convinced him to give cannabis a trial.  I wish I had started six years ago as I was somewhat deppressed as most people are.  I watched him improve over the tablets he use to take and I told my wife he would fry his brain with one or the other ,  it never happened.  Well thank you for the tip on the vaporizer I will definately get a portable any brand you can think of that would not be a waste of money ?  The last few RX pills I got were very expensive and it took five tablets and ten hours to work enough to stop the crushing pain and one script was for only nine tablets.  Please recommend a decent vaporizer without the bag aparatus thanks again for your time and take care.

Re: Migraines

The vaporizer that is use at home is like this one: http://www.gotvape.com/store/Vapor_Doc_Vapor_Cannon.php

I can put just a little bit of medicine in it to get rid of the migraines and then turn it off for next time.

For portable use I still use a pipe right now, but I am getting ready to order this portable vaporizer: http://www.gotvape.com/store/i-inhale-vaporizer.php

Re: Migraines

mmj is the only thing beside oxygen at 15 lpm that helps, it works best when used one right after the other, as quickly as possible and a nasle cannular is used. there will be liquid start to drain from nostrills. it will be very unconfortable but not as bad as the migrain. sometime the pounding gets worse just before it starts to subside. take every breath through your nose and out your mouth, this is very important. ive only had these cluster migrains for 12 years now and ive been experimenting. ever since the brain surgery has failed to impress me! i use 2 h tanks and 12 e cilinders every two weeks. the oxygen is used in 20 to 30 minute intervalls and as long frequent as needed.
Cannabis is a gift

ps it was 480 volts on 2/05/1997 that gave me this life i live now, dont work on power unless your sure the power is off. trust no one!! like i did, the mayor of a city i was workin for at the time of injury. folks dont care once your injured! then they lie to ya!

Re: Migraines

I have been using cannabis since 2001 to treat my migraines.  I stopped for a short period of time while pregnant.  Boy, was that tough!  Pregnancy migraines are the worst!  Some weeks I suffer with migraines for 2 to 3 days solid.  My normal weeks consists of 3, even 4 days lost to migraines.  In 2001 I began smoking cannabis to treat the awful migraines.  I discovered it quite by accident.  One day after suffering through a terrible migraine and getting no relief from Maxalt, tylenol, or whatever else I tried, I decided to smoke a joint in hopes of being able to at least destract myself from the pain.  Wow!  With in 3 or 4 hits the migraine was gone.  I started researching medical marijuana and was so pleased to learn that cannabis had relieved other people's migraines too.  Eight years later I still keep a few migraine meds on hand, but very seldom use them.  They are just not reliable; not like cannabis.

I just started using a vaporizer, and I am very pleased with it so far.  I opted for a silver surfer vaporizer.  It's worth the money to buy a good vaporizer.  Your lungs will thank you for vaping instead of smoking.  I also keep a glass pipe for portable use.

Using marijuana returns to me the day that the migraine has stollen.  I'm able to function, and be a pleasant member of my family instead of locking myself in a dark room with ice packs and ear plugs.

My doctor is full aware of my usage and is currently helping me to get a medical liscence in my state.  I'm so greatful for medical marijuana.  As brainpain said, Cannabis is a gift.  I would recommend it to anyone suffering chronic migraines, or any other chronic pain.

Re: Migraines

Hi new guy here. I have been suffering from migrains for almost 29 yrs. And then 4 yrs ago I had a brain anyurism. My headaches are pretty much all the time. Like many of you I have had just about every type of pain meds there is.I was in the Navy when I got hit in the head during a man overboard rescue. I was just 19. Of course the Navy doctors
kept giving me all kinds of drugs for the pain none of which worked. Then the VA doctors
started doing the same thing. But they have given up on me because my pain is so severe at times that pain meds just do not work. And I can no longer tollerate narcotics. they make me very sick. I have been tring to get the VA to help me get MMj for a fews weeks now but of course that won't happen anytime soon. I live in WA and I have tried
to go through  THCF in Seattle. But I have ran into a wall tring to get my med records realeased. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appriecated. thank you and sorry to so long winded.

Re: Migraines

Guinness59, Your story breaks my heart.  Don't give up on getting your medical records.  If they wont send them to THC Foundation directly maybe they will give copies to you.  You have every right to obtain those medical records, they are yours!

Re: Migraines

hello again. Just to give an update, I just got a call from the THC-Foundation yesterday. They recieved my records! Much to my surprise. Now I have to wait until Monday to call and setup an appointment.
I am so looking forward to becoming pain free at long last, I hope.

Re: Migraines

When my wife was last hospitalized the nurse took her oxygen cannula off and like a slob just tossed it onto a shelf by the room nozzles. When she left I put it on and that O2 at 4 L / minute really helped get rid of my migraine. But, the pain re started shortly after I discontinued the oxygen.

Pot holds me off of the restart for about an hour. And it is the absolutely best there is from anywhere for any price at stopping the nausea. Thank God for pot! And a big thank you to the brave friends here in Oregon who blazed the trail so I can follow.

Geo Bush, God Will judge you for your hypocrisy and pain you have delivered to our friends who run the compassion clubs and farms all those people went to to grow their pot and are jailed for it. He packed his rotten nose with coke, but when someone really needs it he turned up the federal heat on our friends.

I am a whisker from getting my blessed OMMA card and then I can start my first legal grow in my life!

Thanks SafeAccess for your good work disseminating the news and knowledge as you have.

God bless all the nice peeps on this site and may you find your healing in this life. Some day we will eat drops of cannabis extract for breakfast to prevent cancer and only God knows what else just like we feed vitamins to our kids today.

There is absolutly no possible way we have THC receptors, two kinds!, in our brains if we weren't eating it for thousands or tens and hundreds of thousands of years before we got so modern that we forgot to do what we are supposed to eat... cannabis.

Re: Migraines

Hello,

I get migraines and also non migraine headaches several times a week.  I would really like to try and see if the medical Marijuana to see if that works. Its so much safer and better for me than all these pain killers. I have no idea how to start though. I just moved to Maryland and found out that it is legal here.

I would like to know what I have to do to get it. Do I just ask my Dr.? I must admit I feel a little funny about asking my Dr. about it. I dont want him to think I am a druggy lol

Thanks smile

Re: Migraines

A few of you may want to have your doctors re-evaluate your migraines. Some of them sound more like cluster headaches which are usually treated with high flow oxygen. A couple years ago I finally found out that I suffer from both migraines and cluster headaches, but I have also found that medical cannabis has been very successful in treating both types of headaches.

The best way to determine the difference between the cluster headache and a migraine is over sensitivity to outside stimulus (light, sound, cold, heat, touch, etc.), which usually describes migraines. Also, cluster headaches typically do not involve nausea as migraines do.

The cluster headaches normally do not start out slowly, and build up over time like the migraines do, but hit all of the sudden, normally without warning at all. A lot of times my cluster headaches feel like I was hit all of the sudden with a baseball bat in the side of my head.

Cluster headaches tend to ease off after a while, then come back again and again, in clusters (where the name cluster headaches comes from).

Both cluster headaches and migraines are treated with medical cannabis, however they are two different types of pain, one is caused when the blood veins constrict or dilate, the other is neurological, but the cannabis treats both.

Re: Migraines

Yeah, i know what you mean. I'm only 17 and i've been getting migraines for 3 to 4 years now. I get them 3-4 times a week and the medicine i was on did not really help. I've been told mmj would help. How can i get the approval, Do i need to talk with my doctor about this, cause i never brought it up.

Please reply.

What state do you live in? Each states laws are different, especially regarding a minor using medical cannabis.

Re: Migraines

Zippoking,
That's great.  Do all of your research before approaching your doctor.  Find out what is required by the state to get your liscence and take your findings and the forms with you to your next appointment.  ASA is a great source for info.  Good luck!

Re: Migraines

I did, it's cause I can't sleep and I'll end up going to sleep at 7 in the morning and I'll wake up with a migraine. And I'll get them 4-5 days a week. Plus I've been getting them for over 3 years. And everytime they prescribe pain medication to me it doesn't seem to work and when I seen this forum and videos I decided to smoke it to see if it works and it does..

Re: Migraines

Hi folks,
Does anyone know of a specific strain of MMJ that is best for the treatment of Migraines?  Before obtaining my state card I was at the mercy of what ever was being sold on the street.  Any strain I've ever used has helped with the pain, but the problem was sedation, couch-lock, increased hunger, etc.  I just don't have the option of kicking back, I need something that will relieve my pain but still allow me to be productive.

These days there are so many different strains that are available at dispensaries.  So I wondered if anyone out there had better luck with one strain over another.  Any input would be great!

Re: Migraines

just started 3 or 4 weeks ago. i held out with modern medicine for quite some time. unfortunately medicine is more finance than science. no smoking, just edibles so far. i'm very new to cannabis.

i seem to get best results if i take it with coffee - possibly the heat is helping? also tried a sample of a topical, similar to vapo rub, and was fairly pleased so far.

i'm trying to be anal about keeping a journal of what and when i take something, and the pain level - usually 5-7 of 10. i would like to start whatever 'scientific data' is needed to get this all more acceptable.

other things that have helped my migraines (complex - all kinds except the back of the neck)
are capsasin (chili pepper) nasal spray (if you don't mind being punched in the face to get rid of a migraine, i'd recommend it) and avoiding triggers, like many foods (usually salty/creamy/fatty/processed foods) strobing lights (like night driving in the city), high pitched sounds and extreme temperature changes (like getting into a swimming pool).

i'm a brain tumor survivor (summer of '90 - pinealoma germanoma). still managed to finish my engineering degree ('96) and even worked for a few years, 'til the migraines got diagnosed.

anyone else discover food triggers? butter is a bad one for me, so i'm avoiding several of the edibles. a friend might be giving me a vaporizer soon - never saw one before clicking the link up above - thanks.
